Brenda Myers holds a Music Performance degree from CSU Fresno, music teaching credential from Fresno Pacific University as well as a Master’s in West African/Caribbean Music and Culture.

From 1983 through the spring of 2001, Brenda was a percussion specialist with the Fresno Unified, and Clovis Unified School Districts. During this period, her elementary, intermediate and high school percussion ensembles performed for California state music conventions, festivals, and successfully competed in local, state and national competitions.

By 2000, she had begun to experiment with a totally aural style of teaching she saw demonstrated by the Fabulous Leopards Percussionists, at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 1999. The energy, enthusiasm and musicality she experienced that day was unlike anything she had seen or heard before. After convincing their director, Diane Downs to teach a one-week camp, Brenda saw that same energy, enthusiasm and musicality from her local students. She knew this was something she wanted to explore. She began the We Got the Beat Youth Percussion Band.

A year later it was time to say good-by to the school districts, and begin offering We Got the Beat-style music to students in and around the Fresno and Clovis area. This year, that area includes Caruthers, Madera & Prather.

For the first time ever this past year, WGTB was large enough to split into 2 groups, Primary and Secondary. This has vastly improved the efficiency with which all the students learn. Each group rehearses for 2 hours a week.

"We just have a great time learning and performing fun music!"

Throughout these past 16 years, We Got the Beat has performed for numerous community events as well as many local schools, Senator Chuck Poochigian, The Caruthers Fair, The Big Fresno Fair, California Music Educators Association (CMEA) Convention, Days of Percussion in Long Beach, San Rafael, and Oakland, National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) trade show. WGTB performed prior to the Evelyn Glennie Concerts with the Fresno Philharmonic. In December of 2015 we took a 3 day trip up to Humboldt State University to play with our friends in the HSU Calypso Band. While we were there we were able to tour the world famous Marimba One facility.

Brenda's current group, We Got the Beat Youth Percussion Band has been busy performing locally and statewide for events such as: Fresno Unified Retired Teachers Dinner, at the Evelyn Glennie concert with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra, at Humboldt State University Calypso Band's end-of-year concert, the California Educator’s Convention in Sacramento, and The National Association of Music Merchants Trade Show in Anaheim. Brenda is currently teaching through the Peoples School of Creative Arts. Her program includes over 70 percussion students.
